I get flutters in my stomach...in a good way.

This was my first time on a real business trip alone. ALONE. Adam & I always travel for weddings & business together (and we LOVE it!!). No exceptions. But this time there was no adam, just lil ol me. Things were looking good. I woke up to my 5 alarms, found parking at the airport and looked stylish (pink fall coat, pink & white floral scarf & pink zebra print handbag with jeans and pointy toed shoes...if you MUST know) was at the security/immigrations desk (which may I just say is totally trippy.I mean 10 ft ago i was in Canada, and now
im supposedly in the states, being treated like a escapee from unsolved mysteries....

mean security lady: "Where are you going?"
me: "um Seattle"
mean security lady: "that sounds like a question. dont you know where you are going?"
me. "yes" (much more business like) "Seattle for sure" (akward laugh)
mean security lady: What are you going there for?
me: work
mean security lady: "what is work?" (eyes rolling)
me: oh I shoot weddings.
mean security lady: (eyes alarmed. only hearing the word "shoot") what?!
me: Oh, not *whispered* Shoot, I mean photograph. Yes. Im a very very professional photographer. Not a *whispered* *gasp* shooter at all. nope. not me. nothing to do with shooting *nervous akward laughter*.... (eyes avoiding akward
eyecontact...they go up to the right.,,or wait, is that the sign that someone IS lying....or is it up to the left....)
mean security lady: long akward pause as she studies if i can hold her gaze (which of course I cant, I mean im looking up to the right.......) .......akward time passing....me wondering if I should break out pictures of rockwell so that she sees that im not a criminal, cause criminals dont have kids, right? RIGHT?? ..... (breaks into a smile) you have a nice trip. GOOD LUCK.

Adam and I were driving home from a fantastic date at the batting cages & go carts (and yes, bumper boats. I made him get into the bumper boats while I rocked out any road/boat rage ive ever had) and we got talking.
me: "have I ever told you abour the poem I performed in grade one?"
Adam: (fibbing) "no"
me: "it was called Alligator Pie, and I practiced for weeks. Shall I perform it now?"Adam: "sure honey"
me: "alligator pie, alligator pie, if i dont get some i think im gonna die. give away my hockey stick, give away the sky, but don't give away my alligator pie. Alligator soup, alligator soup, if i dont get some i think im going to droop....(etc) " (yes I performed the whole thing). (in a very monotone-im 6 years old and scared way)
Adam: "so cute honey! Did I ever tell you that by grade 4 I had all the verses of in Flanders Field Memorized"
me: (fibbing) no.
Adam: ...(performs it perfectly)
me: "you know, I think we've had this exact conversation before"
Adam: "me too"
me: Are we getting stale? no new stories? is that bad do ya think?
Adam: "No honey, that is the thing about Love. We've shared all of our stories from the past, and now all of the new exciting stories are together. We are making the new stories, now"
me: " I could die you are so perfect, thats exactly right. Not only do we have the safety & security of knowing each others past & all the charming stories, but we are making a million new ones together. Hand in Hand.
Isnt Love Grand? (that is why he's my best friend. He's so smart.)

Rollerblading Hotshot - Kari-

The other day my hubby, Matthew, came home from work... I felt like I needed to stretch my legs and I told him that I wanted to go running (which shocked him, because he knows I am not a runner...at all..), however, once I explained that I want to put on my rollerblades and have him run while I hang on to the back of his shirt, it all made sense to him ;) Now, let me just say... I am terrible at rollerblading. No really. I haven't busted those sweet puppies out since last year (i rode them once last year- so no improvement to be had).
But I wanted to start it up again and have it as my new primary form of exercise. Sitting on our front step I laced up those rollerblades perfectly- stood up on my wobbly legs and I clung onto Matt's arm.
O Heavens.. what have i gotten into!
Any little twig or small pebble on the sidewalk made me nervous and I told Matt to slow this action down just a little bit and I woiuld proceed very cautiously and 'step over' the obstacles. 20 minutes goes by and Matt is still my main support... In a rash decision I decided to venture away from the womb- I let go of my safety hold. I was building up speed on the smooth sidewalk...
I felt the wind through my ..err...hair...extensions..
I turn my head around to give my hubby a 'Look at me!' smile,
and as I was turning my head back to 'starting' position...
I saw it..
I saw the curb...
I saw the curb that could cause my death...ok, I am being dramatic, but still.

Not knowing how to slow down...
I looked back at Matt and give him this look as if 'oh sweet mother of mercy..what have I done..?? HELP ME!!!'
but I knew there was not enough time...
Matt see's my dilema
and he yells in a concerned voice
'Jump the curb!!'
and I had no choice...time was up..
So I did what I had to
I jumped.

and I landed..

now, it didnt look glamerous, or professional by any means but the fact still remains- I cleared a 4 inch jump...
and landed on my very first run of the season!

As I laid my head on my pillow that night... I looked over at Matt and said in all seriousness... " I bet you didnt know you married a 'rollerblading hotshot' " He chuckled to himself and said

'Goodnight Babe'

Late last fall as wedding season was slowing down (that being said, we had more winter weddings then ever!), I said to Adam "I handled that awesome hey?" (I do most of the post processing, which means hours on the computer having a love affair with photoshop). To which he replied, "um, yah, not bad honey".

"WHAT??" Not bad? I thought? Every single bride received her images on time (if not early), every album was perfect, emails we answered the same day, I was on top of my game. A Olympian (you have no idea how many times I re-spelled that) of the computer. Before I stood on my coffee table and made myself a paper-chain faux medal, he replied "You just seemed a little frazzled. You needed more time for you".

"frazzled?!?"
I may or may not admit that tears welled up in my eyes (innocent until proved guilty of course).

Did he just call me out? Speak the truth, albeit in his every gentle & kind way....

I slowly got off my coffee table and said "your right. I needed balance"

So what did I learn? What did I do differently this year? Truth?

Lots.

I have learned (and am still perfecting) the art of balance. Editing images in the morning, and then if its an especially hot day, taking my son to the beach does not equal bad & unmotivated. No, it equals smart. I come back to my work, refreshed, renewed, fulfilled and with the energy of my toddler.

I shoot weddings because I love them. I edit the photos and love it.

But I also know that "we give our lives to that which we give our time".

Photoshop will never love me back.

Rockwell & Adam will.

Therefore, I have learned how to put myself & my little family first, take the odd bike ride (while brewing up new pose ideas!), and just love life.

Because in loving life, I am a better mother, wife, friend and photographer.

That happiness is contagious and as such, it shows in my clients images. and that makes me happy.

and once again, not a single bride has had to wait. In fact, most have had their photos early.

Funny how it all works out.

Reaching Out...

This past sunday we had a Booth at Bridal Conference. It was a fantastic time! We are so incredibly excited for the upcoming season and are pretty sure we snagged all of the kind, lovely, sweetheart brides out there! Our inbox is already bursting at the seams with brides wanting to book us, and we feel such gratitude. Gratitude to be able to do something we love. Not everyone loves what they do, or is excited to go to work, but we are.

For that we are truly humbled and blessed.

At this fair, we wanted to do something different. We wanted to reach out and bridge gaps. There is nothing worse then snobiness, and we have found in the past, that bridal vendors (those in the same field) are often very standoff-ish and snobby to one another. Because of competition I assume. But, the fact is, if you are passionate about what you do, you will have clients, regardless of competition. We wanted the freedom to go walk past other photographer's booths as we were browsing the fair, without the panic of them "seeing us" and wondering if we were "scoping out the competition" :)
So, we did what we have always wanted to do. Make friends of our peers. Thats right Internet, we walked right up, introduced ourselves and said "hi"! We complimented their work and discussed photography-ish things (things that would put your average person to sleep) and it was fun! At first they looked at us like we were crazy (im sure thinking "dont they know competitors dont talk???"), but you know what? In no time at all, they came by our booth to chat & mingle some more.
We've always believed that being competitive and snobby just kills the soul and makes your photos ugly (because you are to busy being worried about everyone else, instead of loving your craft), and we were right, being friendly & kind really is the best. We made some fantastic friends of some talented photographers.

We get a lot of emails from Brides & Photographers asking us questions! We have a very great FAQ section on our site, but its still nice to answer some on here. So here it goes!

For the Photographers

Q: How do you get such great expressions out of your clients?

A: Be ridiculously funny. We've been known to make total fools out of ourselves to get our couples to laugh! No but in all seriousness, whether its the laughing-having a great time expression or the really tender moments that we capture, we credit it to our love of love. We are genuinely so excited to go to "work" and love being at the wedding and seeing the bride & groom in love. If you feel "meh" towards weddings or wedding photography at all, do your self a favor and the brides a favor and specialize in something else. You should be there with your full heart, and then that is when you get those really fantastic images. When we first started up a gazillion years ago, we also did family & newborn portraiture. Our hearts were not in it. We did not feel that same excitement as we feel when we are photographing a wedding. So we followed our hearts and now we only photograph weddings. Find what you are passionate about and specialize in that. Not only will you naturally produce happy, emotion filled images of your couples, but you will become an industry leader because all your creative energy is in one area. So in summary, find what you love, love what you do, and the art will create itself!

Q: What are two things that help to make photographing a wedding easier?
A: We are in love with 2 things at the moment. Our GPS & our shootsac.

I had the absolute privilege of shooting this beautiful couples Engagement (this past July) and their wedding (this September)!

They were game to do anything-
and I mean anything...
From dirty back alleys (that were so dodgy)... to having to deal with the police (oh, dear!)...
I dont think I have ever laughed so much shooting a wedding- I mean, tears came to my eyes from laughing so much! They were really a Hoot to be with!

Lash Strengthener Giveaway!!!

Beautiful lashes can make such a huge difference in photos. So much so, that we recommend brides wear fake lashes (they can range from natural looking, to very dramatic) on their wedding day, as it just makes their eyes "pop" in the photos...and nothing is more romantic then a nice bed of lashes during a coy looking down pose. It just adds beauty. But how much better if a Bride could actually grow those lashes!!
Then you could have them on your honeymoon! Even in the ocean!

A blog that we love to read is doing a give-away of a fantastic lash conditioner. The product tester (totally independant of the seller) tried out the product and noticed a HUGE difference (and this girl seems obsessed with nice lashes...and thus picky)!

Time for some answers

Well with an inbox flooding over from photographers and brides, we thought it is high time that we answer them! With it being in the middle of wedding season, we do not have the time to email every photographer back, so we thought we would try to do these type of posts to help answer your questions! So, here are answers to a few!

Q: I am Loving those dramatic type of photos, how can I make sure we achieve them on my wedding day?

A: One of the best things that you can do is look through fashion magazines and practice dramatic "looks" in the mirror. The next best thing you can do is have a long veil. The fun/dramatic shots that we can do with a long veil is unreal. You can pick them up on ebay for around $30. Even if you dont "wear" it as part of your wedding outfit (this bride didnt), it still can give you some really glamerous type of shots.

Q: Your brides skin always looks so fresh & glowy, how do you achieve this?

A: We do some retouching in photoshop, but the real secret is having a skilled makeup artist apply your makeup. These gals (& guys) know what they are doing and can make you look your very best. Its your wedding day, this is one splurge that you should do. After all, your face is not only in all your photos, but something that everyone sees! (we also highly recommend false lashes as they really make a difference in photos). The makeup artist that recommend exclusively is Faces By Olive (book early, she fills up very fast).

Q: We would like photos of our cake cutting & bouquet toss, but notice your packages only have your staying until the 3rd dance, can you stay longer?

A: We can stay longer for an additional hourly rate, or you can do what a lot of our brides do, and do the cake cutting and/or bouquet toss before you begin the dance.

Q: How do you get such intimate/romantic looks from your clients? The results are truly remarkable?

A: They are in love, its easy. Just be easy to be around, be real, and you will get that back in the photos. Let them know that it is okay to cuddle & kiss, that this is their day, and they will usually run with that. It also helps to love what you do as happiness is contagious. They will be excited about their photos if you are, and that shows in their expressions and in the spark in their eye.

We are still on location in LA (shot a wedding here), and it doesnt need any help being warmer (the weather is awesome!), however, if it did, this would be the key. This email totally warmed my heart. This bride was so incredible. She was a totally sweet doll, out there in the minus -33 (that is what it said in my car!), so excited to marry her man, never forgot about her grandma who couldnt attend for a moment (12:34 :) and was so upbeat about photos and trying anything.

E-Session

This E-session was just this past saturday, and these find lovebirds faced the -40 weather! We did most of the shots indoors in a simple indoor library/civic center (shows that with good photography, you can get lovely images anywhere!!), but near the end of the session we went outside for about 5 quick minutes and got a few really romantic looking images. I had a great time with these two and am so excited for their wedding (oh and they have the cutest.puppy.ever!) Here are just a few from their session.

Hey Radelle!!!!!!Ward and I just returned from our extended honeymoon... ... The absolute first thing we did when we arrived home was drop our backpacks on the floor and run to the photo album. I'm sure my mom had already shown half of edmonton our pictures!!! Half of her fridge is covered in our wedding pictures now : )Our pictures are AMAZING!!!!!!! I love the candid shots and how you really caught our vintage wedding theme. We had so much fun that day taking pictures infront of our little yellow school bus and getting chased down by those goats, in Fort Edmonton, that ate half of Wards boutinerre and were eyeing up my bouquet. You even captured our fun bridal party Kung Fu fighting dance and we laughed so hard when we seen that collage.

I can't begin to thank you enough for what a great job you did on our album and slideshow. We watched the slideshow 4 times in one day!!!! I wonder if DVD's wear out if you watch them too much?? I already know of two friends so far that will for sure book with you for their upcoming weddings!! The best of luck in your future photography. You have some great talent in what you do!!!XOXO

We love all of our couples. I really loved this couple for a few reasons:

1) the Bride was a red head and I love red heads. Im hoping to birth one or two daughters with red hair still!

2) It was fall. Fall is my fave season. It makes me enthusiastic, romantic and blissfull. Nevermind the fact that her hair coordinated with nature's colors. sigh...all so perfect!

3) These two are absolute sweethearts and so in love.

Hey Radelle, WOW!!!!!!!! Our wedding pictures came out better than we had ever expected : ) We're sitting here in Thailand on our honeymoon enjoying and reminiscing of our big day while looking at our awesome pics. We can't wait to see the album once we get home. Thankyou once again for all the fun times we've had shooting my sisters wedding in May and our wedding last week. I hope you didn't get paintball all over your car on the way home!

I have to say, if anyone ever wants to trash a wedding dress, paintball
is definitely the way to go! I took it straight to the garage last night
and this weekend we are nailing it to the wall on the garage.
I have some pretty good war wounds this morning. Can't quite bend my
left knee all the way. But it was for a good cause. I will remember
Trashing my wedding dress with you for forever! Thank you so much for
coming with us. You were a lot of fun and you froze the event in time so
we can remember it forever and share it with friends and family that
couldn't be there with us. I can't wait to see the photos...they are
going to be too fun!

I suggest this to every bride out there. Don't throw your dress in a box
in the attic. Your first born daughter will not want to wear it in 20
years for her wedding. And you will never look at it again. Pick
something you have always wanted to do (for me it was paintball) and
dress up in your gown and go for it! It was a great time and Radelle was
so fun!

Thanks Radelle! That was a great night and we will remember it for

I just LOVED shooting brooke! She was so happy, upbeat and able to pose so well. She just worked so many different looks with little direction. A natural. Not to mention I loved, loved, loved her hair-do and have tried to do it on myself a couple of times (yes, just to wear around the office! :)

HI Adam and Kari and Radelle! Thank you all so very much for the AMAZING photos!!! My heart stopped when they came in the mail, and so soon! Danny and I have been looking at them over and over AND OVER! They are beautiful! Does that make my conceded??? Is that even how you spell conceded? Either way, I love them. WE love them! You caught every detail. From my shoe 'collection' to Danny's beautiful eyes. And when you asked at the dinner to take our rings to take photos of them and we joked that you were going to run off with them...I loved that you left your car keys with us!! You were so fun to hang out with all day! We were thrilled to see what you went off and did with our rings! incorporating the water foutain with them, the stone detail, and using our flowers as a backdrop. I could write this email forever! Bridal Conference!

Well we had an absolute blast at the bridal conference! We met the nicest people of all time and are so excited about our upcoming year! It has only been 3 days since the fair, and dates are literally flying off the calender. If you are wanting us to shoot your wedding, you need to email quickly (radelle@hotmail.com) as we are taking the bookings on a first come first save basis as we work our way through our inbox!

The two main things that we heard over and over as people would visit our booth were a) how stunning and fun the pictures were and b) how fantatic our prices are. We love hearing both of those things.

We truly consider it a privledge (and the best job in the world!) to be able to be a part of such an important day, and hopefully make it that much funner and more beautiful by what we have to offer.

Just got this today. Made our hearts swell. Man we love what we do!

" I just Had to write to tell you that my heart nearly stopped beating! I just got my package in the mail, and not only is the album stunning, but every photo on the DVD is incredible. You didnt miss a detail! There were shots on there that I had NO idea you had taken! what a great suprise. Never mind that both me and my husband teared up as we flipped throught the images of us! You totally caught our personality and our romance. My favorites are the one one of us walking off in the park (soo romantic!), the tender one (its a closeup) of him kissing my forehead and the super fun one of us laughing (im totally putting that one above my couch. it makes me smile so much).

Krystal and Booker are the whole package. Not only are they the type of people that you love the instant you meet them, but they are so fun, and most of all, so in love with each other. They are a couple of the nicest, most thoughtful people that you will ever meet, and it was truly our honor to spend the day with them. Krystal, like most of our brides, went with our amazing Extravaganza Package, and this is one of her lovely collages.....

This collage is the first time booker saw her. They opted to see each other before the ceremony, and we just loved the tender moments captured. He adores her, isnt it just awesome !!( Of course we adore her as well, she is real darling!)

We are always telling our couples to incorperate their personalities into the picture. Booker is a big time ball player, and wouldnt you guess that these photos ended up being the ones that he loved the most!This series is so fun. Krystal was supposed to "pretend swing", only she didnt know that. The ball ended up on our poor groom where no ball should.....

The groomsmen were a riot, they literally ran up this wall, turned and jumped!

We decided that we would blog more images from this wedding then we usually do, so that couples who are inquiring about booking us, can have a better feel for the type of pictures that we take, the amount, the quality, the attention to details and the style. The next 3 or 4 blog posts (scroll down), will take you through Brooke and Connor's day (which was so awesome!). They will be getting all kinds of goodies with their package, including the DVD with all of the pictures (all touched up, highest resolution) on it. They will have around 1500 images on it! So, while this is a longer blog post then usual, featuring more images then we usually feature, it is still not even close to their entire wedding day! (we will be featuring around 70 images....)

why are we featuring so many pictures, from begining to end? Well, we believe that wedding photography is a HUGE part of your day...and there are a lot of photographers out there with a SLR camera and a business card. We feel that it is important to know who and what you are hiring. Anyone can show 3 or 4 nice pictures from a wedding! (even uncle john with his point and shoot!), what you need to look for when you are looking to hire a photographer is that they can cover the entire event with amazing photos. That every photos is jaw dropping and not just the 3 or 4 that they feature.

So, please enjoy a "larger then usual" sneak peek into Brooke and Connor's amazing day! The flowers were so well done!

With most of our packages, we stay until the 3rd dance, which means that you get awesome reception coverage! This couple ended up with over 300 images from their reception alone. We capture so many things, grandma and grandpa laughing, dad with a tear in his eye, little baby cousin crumpling your program....

not to mention all of the lovely details that you took so long to plan...

I loved this wedding! The bride and groom had put a lot of prep and work into their wedding, and yet on the "day of" they just relaxed and had fun. It sure shows in their pictures. On top of that, they brough along their green VW van and puppy to the "formals". We are always telling people to do things like this, things that personalize your pictures, making them tell your story even more.

Super busy here at the office. Not a lot of time to type. This wedding was so romantic! Outdoors, under the tallest trees you ever did see. The couple did the cutest "sand" ceremony with twigs, and leaves and berries (showing their outdoorsy sides). It was a hot day, but we all survived, and had a great time!

May I just say that we always get the sweetest most stunning brides. However, this year has really been such a treat with our grooms as well, and this guy takes the cake. I like to think of myself as a happy, up-beat person. I'll tell you why I am. Here is the secret. I just love my life. I am married to the most talented man ever. He is also so kind, so generous of heart and so thoughtful. He really treats me like a princess, and as such, I am a huge believer in love. This seems to come through in my photos, and I have Adam to thank for that. Not only does he impress me with his photographic techniques/poses/shots/ideas all the time, but he is the inspiration for mine. Additionally, I am totally blessed with the most darling baby face you ever did see. Rockwell lights up my life and gives me so much joy. He reminds me of what really matters in life. When we shoot your wedding, we try so hard to make the pictures reflect you, your personality and your unique love. This really isnt hard to do, despite the fact that we shoot so many weddings, because we are passionate about what we do. When we are shooting for you, we literally imagine our shots on the walls of your home, you passing them in the hallway and feeling those same tender feelings for your hubby all over again. Your little ones looking at them and saying "how come you are kissing" or "mommy you looked like a princess". We really believe that we are creating art for your home. I'll keep the write up small for now and just give you viewers a large load of stunning pictures to look at! Suffice it to say that MaryAnne & Justin's wedding was a class act and no expense was spared. It was so fantastic, so classy & rich (even the fabrics!), and yet so darling and intimate. I dont know that I have seen a groom look at a Bride the way Justin looked at MaryAnne. It would about stop your heart. Amazing. These two are so cute, and their families love each other (what a great start in life!!), so it is all just perfect! Ok, I said that I wasnt going to write much (but I did...)

Krystal and Booker

Well this last weekend, we had the privledge of photographing Krystal and Booker's wedding. It was fantastic. These two mean so much to us, and we are so happy for them.

This is just the tinest sneak preview, and there will be MUCH more to come as we get the images proofed.

We just want Booker & Krystal to know that we wish the all the best in the world from the bottom of our hearts.

Their reception was stunning. Roses everywhere. The colors were deep red and Gold and they had the most exquisite Red and Gold silky chair covers (everywhere!), matching charger plates and napkins. To add even more class, they had a rose across the plate of all of the women/girls. Before the dance, they had a program. It was so entertaining! Cloggers, tap dances, songs by incredibly singers, etc.

What an amazing evening, with a breathtaking venue. I overheard everyone talking about how beautiful it was in there, not to mention how much they enjoyed the program.

So, here is just a quick glance. Check back in about 5 days for TONS more!!!!!!!

Red Deer Wedding

Just a little glimpse for Megan & Gordie. LOVED their wedding!! Megan was such an organized Bride that she sent me photos (in the mail) of the spots where we would be doing photos! It was a great idea. I was able to plan various neat shots ahead of time and really work quickly on her day! If you are planning a wedding in a town/location that ive never been, I highly recommend this as it really helped! Great couple. Classy Wedding and FANTASTIC food!!

Just quickly, here is a sneak peak into the pictures from Japan! All we can say is wow is cherry blossom season (lasts about 2 weeks) every the perfect time to get married in Japan! Amazing!
